We dove deep into the science end starting with physics and the Big Bang, then moving onto chemistry with stars forming, and finally physical science with our Earth and solar system. We will be continuing on with Big History Project starting with Threshold 5: Life. This year will be focused more on world history with biology and engineering being our main science topics.

My kids have been doing core subjects (read aloud, writing, grammar, spelling, penmanship, and math) for most of summer, so we'll continue on with that. I've been training them on time management by giving them a list of what needs to be finished by the end of the week and letting them figure out how they want to work on it. One has been completing one subject at a time trying to get it all done in as few days as possible, while the other has been doing one day's worth of each subject every day. Ugh, they are opposite in every way.

I really want to integrate this into Big History. I have been working on making my own writing companions for all of the units. Unfortunately, it's taking more time than I thought. Easy Writing is a good fill-in while I work on my companion books. It will set them up for solid sentence work and familiarize them with combining sentences, appositives, along other methods WR uses. The main idea for WR is to apply writing to subjects that are currently being covered. Easy Writing gets the structure, but the sentences are out of context making writing an entirely separate subject than Big History.

Trying something new here. This is my attempt at covering all of my bases for my 8th grade mildly dyslexic. I like that it's a workbook we can discuss together. I like that it pulls words from all types of sources, fiction, nonfiction, speeches, and primary sources. They see the word in multiple settings - in context, analogies, synonyms/antonyms, shades of meaning, multiple meanings and other ways. It also includes word study of roots, affixes, idioms and sayings, academic language, and figurative language. When I first started homeschooling, I planned out the whole year by day and by week 2 we were already off and I was reshuffling. Never again.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Now I make huge lists that include everything that relates to our topic and then I can check it off as we go. This gives us the ability to go down some rabbit holes when something grabs their interest, yet still see the finish line at the end of the year.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Big History Project has done everything for you. They provide ready-made lesson plans, blank lesson plan forms, schedules for a full year and for one semester, how to give high school credit for world history and/or science, and a lot more resources along with a forum for questions. They have an online classroom setup to add your kids and they have access to their lesson plan. Quizzes are optional and only 5 questions. I like to use them as review to make sure my younger, not quite as science-oriented 11 year old is keeping up with my 12 year old who is eating up every BHP crumb.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">My lists are my way of keeping track, but they are not necessary since BHP provides everything you need. I knew we would be skipping and reformatting some things to make this high school level program work for my middle school aged students as well as scale things down from a classroom full of kids to 2.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I included in my lists a table that has every activity BHP planned by unit and section. I wanted to be able to see at a glance where we are because we actually aren't doing much on the website. We're using YouTube to watch the BHP playlist videos on the tv. I'm printing out the reading material so we can highlight the key information and vocabulary.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So prepare yourselves for big lists. I don't expect to do everything on them, but at the end of the year I'll have a good idea of what was covered along with my version of lesson plans. My state does not require any documentation, but it is nice to have just in case.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I signed up as a homeschooler* for Big History Project and I've been working my way through the teaching lessons and planning. For those not familiar with it, Big History Project is a big picture online curriculum that integrates science, history, reading, writing and critical thinking. It can count as a high school English, Science or World History credit depending on how you set up. There are multiple lesson plans already available for different age ranges and abilities. Best yet, it is FREE! Bill Gates was excited to support this open source curriculum.after watching David Christian's Ted Talk The History of the World in 18 Minutes. *click on sign up as a teacher and in the school name drop-down menu "homeschool" is at the bottom of the list.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I plan to use it for the full year as a spine and integrate as much as possible into it. I will have an 11 year old (6th grade) and a 12 year old (7th grade). I combine quite a bit, but for some things I need to separate them. I'll be working with them on writing essays, time management and study skills. I plan to enroll them in a charter school next year so I want them to be prepared for testing and timed lessons.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It's really a list of the pre-made BHP lesson plan so I can check off as we go along with the schedule, subject breakdown and timeline, along with a list of resources. We tend to go off on rabbit trails and supplement a lot, so I like to have a lot of resources on hand.
It is written for middle school students. You can use it as a spine for history and science or as is. Of course DK means all of the pages are full of colorful images.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott - I happen to love this series specifically for Big History because it brings together characters from mythology and history while working in multiple time periods. It is also a long series that could last the whole year. It's fun to read on the Kindle because we can look up all of the references as we go along.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">BHP includes writing projects, but they are high school level and not a good match for my 11 and 12 year old.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><b style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">IEW World History Themed Writing: I have used IEW's themed writing before and wasn't crazy about it, but I want something really clear and structured, bonus points for including more world history.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Update: Three weeks in and I remember why I didn't like it. It's too formulaic. I want structured, but I don't want my kids to feel required to insert an adverb or a certain clause while writing. Talk about sucking the life out of writing! I plan to attempt to loosen it up while still keeping some of the scaffolding or I will have to drop it and stick with my old friend Bravewriter with maybe some Killgallon. They are so enthusiastic about some of the topics in BHP and we are covering everything so quickly, that I think writing assignments would be the perfect opportunity to slow down and research something they are really interested in. I'm more interested in preserving their love of writing than stressing because they don't follow the standard essay format in middle school.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma";"><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This is not the usual pirate unit study. Savvy? This is for upper elementary to middle school age. It all started with watching the TV series Black Sails with my husband (not for kids). It's a prequel to Treasure Island and includes fictional characters like Long John Silver and Flint, but included many famous pirates as well. While it didn't get the history quite right, there was an awful lot of truth included. Surprisingly, I found the most interesting part to be the politics of pirates. The reasons why they became pirates and the time period, which was well before the Declaration of Independence. They were the original revolutionaries that thumbed their nose at the King for how he treated them. They made life so uncomfortable for the King and Colonists, the King offered a pardon to any pirate (except Vane) who was willing to change their pirating ways. Some were only after gold. Some were terrible, horrible people. Some lived by a strict code and took over ships without a single death. They wanted a free life and gathered a force of freed and escaped slaves, willing and unwilling crewmen from captured ships, and attempted to create their own space outside of anyone's rule but their own.
I'd recommend it
on audio even though it's a lot of facts, read aloud it's more like a
narrative. There are a couple of parts that describe abuses children and
sailors endured on British Naval and merchant ships that would make it not
suitable for sensitive readers. The descriptions are brief and could be skipped
over if you are prepared. I'd recommend it for non-sensitive high schoolers or
adults who want a thorough history lesson on pirates.

Best program I've found for preparing middle school age and up for outside deadlines and requirements. It covers time management, study habits, test strategies, note-taking, meeting deadlines, advocating for yourself and all of those skills that tweens and teens struggle with.

My oldest watched it when he was in 7th grade and learned a lot from it. He thought the professor was funny and enjoyed working through the program. He is still using the skills he learned from this program in his college classes. (dual-enrolled)

Not a sponsor, just a relieved mom who wanted to make sure her homeschooled kid had habits in place by high school so that he was ready for whatever college professors require of him.

Sometimes you need Teflon coating to let it all roll off. Be prepared, once you let people put their foot in the door, you may not like what they have to say.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">If you find yourself cornered at the checkout, the quickest way to shut down their questioning is to simply say "We have researched our options and feel it's best for our family." Repeat if necessary. This tells them that you are serious about homeschooling and reminds them that it's YOUR decision, not theirs. Homeschooling is a legal option. You are doing nothing wrong.
Sometimes they don't talk until they are 3. Sometimes they don't get addition and subtraction until 3rd grade. Sometimes they don't start reading until they are 9. My kids have done all of these and they are making huge progress now. There were sleepless nights and worries of potential learning disabilities. Why? Because they weren't on a "normal" schedule? They are individuals and have different strengths and weaknesses and follow their own timeline, not what's been dictated to them. I've seen it click with them and become proud of themselves because they worked so very hard and finally get it and can move onto the next challenge. All without feeling inadequate or left behind.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08945385698838991145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-672718690032050954.post-8595064045949138982016-06-04T11:55:00.000-07:002016-06-04T11:55:10.421-07:00

"We're having a special treat today," said the king as the delicious smells of homemade pastry filled the banquet hall. "By royal command the pastry chefs have worked all night in the half bakery to make sure that -"
The half bakery?" questioned Milo.
Of course, the half bakery," snapped the king. "Where do you think half-baked ideas come from? Now, please don't interrupt. By royal command the pastry chefs have worked all night to - "
"What's a half-baked idea? asked Milo again.
"Will you be quiet?" growled Azaz angrily; but, before he could begin again, three large serving carts were wheeled into the hall and everyone jumped up to help himself.
"They're very tasty," explained the Humbug, "but they don't always agree with you. Here's one that's very good." He handed it to Milo and, through the icing and nuts, Milo saw that it said, "THE EARTH IS FLAT."
"People swallowed that one for years," commented the Spelling Bee, "but it's not very popular these days - d-a-y-s." He picked up a long one that stated "THE MOON IS MADE OF GREEN CHEESE" and hungrily bit off the part that said "CHEESE." "Now there's a half-baked idea," he said, smiling.
Milo looked at the great assortment of cakes, which were being eaten almost as quickly as anyone could read them. The count was munching contentedly on "IT NEVER RAINS BUT IT POURS" and the king was busy slicing one that stated "NIGHT AIR IS BAD AIR."
"I wouldn't eat too many of those if I were you," advised Tock. "TheY may look good, but you can get terribly sick of them.
"Don't worry," Milo replied; "I'll just wrap one up for later," and he folded his napkin around "EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR THE BEST."

As I look at the massive list of what I wanted to tackle for 4th grade, I can't help but wonder if I ask too much or is it that we go with the flow and I'm quick to drop and change things up. While both true, the latter, definitely has more to do with what we finish and what we don't.

Writing
We finished WWE2. Yes,that is a lower level writing. At this grade they should be into or finishing 3. I use WWE as supplemental to Bravewriter Arrow and Killgallons. Right there I have 3 different writing programs going. Why? I like WWE for its ease of use and selections. Bravewriter Arrow is more of a literature program that includes copywork and points out literary elements. Though I don't see it as super writing intensive. We do like the book selection. One Arrow a month is the norm. Lastly Killgallons Sentence Composing for Elementary is a new favorite. I had used the middle school version with my oldest and decided it would give us more opportunities for copywork and practicing sentence structure. See...not a slacker at all.

Spelling
Check those off! Hermione will be finishing level 1 of Sequential Spelling in a few weeks.
Jibber Jabber will be finishing Book A of Apples and Pears and working on Book B through the summer. He needs constant review and repetition.

Grammar
We've touched on grammar in so many ways. The only actual curriculum we finished was Evan-Moor's Grammar and Punctuation. We used Grammaropolis, Scholastic's Grammar Cop and No Boring Practice Please: Funny Fairy Tale Proofreading, but did not complete them. We'll keep those around as we work on more of the skills in those books. WWE also touches on parts of grammar and punctuation in the copywork.

History
Done! We finished SOTW1. We keep repeating this one. They love it. We didn't do a lot of the activities from the guide. Instead it was a read aloud and narration session. Hermione loves to read and even though I splurged on the Jim Weiss audiobooks, she prefers to read them out loud. There's no way I could say no to her! We'll probably continue with SOTW2 through the summer so we can reach American history for 5th.

Science
RSO Chemistry labs were a hit. The element book was not. That became a stumbling block to me not getting to the labs and it all fell apart. For summer I plan to rework this so the book is out or done for them or something and we can focus on the fun labs all summer.

Math
At the beginning of the year, I dropped Math Mammoth and decided to focus on math fact fluency and reviewing what has been learned so far. I felt like I was helping them too much and needed to take myself out of the equation. I signed them up for Reflex Math, which they LOVE and Khan Academy, which has been a huge success. They are gaining more independence and self-confidence in math. I started them at the bottom in both. They are both already at 75% fact completion in addition/subtraction fluency in Reflex Math. It is not easy to move on in that program. Hermione especially needs lots of work on her +/- facts. JJ, I'm not so worried about and I might advance him onto multiplication/division in early summer. I don't really want to pick MM back up until they have moved onto multiplication and division. I think it will help them accelerate through the book quicker to get those solid. In fact, I'm considering dropping MM altogether because Khan Academy has been such a huge success here. They both like the way it is setup. I feel like they are doing more math on their own without my help. And in 5th grade, they need to start working more independently. It's forced them to practice reading the direction, finding what's important and what the directions are asking them to do and they double check their work before submitting the answer because they don't want to have to do another 5 in a row. All really good habits to be working on.
As an alternative, I might supplement KA with Beast Academy. Those are great for deeper thinking and the comic book style doesn't hurt. I know some use only KA, but I'm not sure if that would work for us.

Mythology
All over the map here. We started the year reading Red Pyramid and then The Lightning Thief to match history. I was hoping one of them would hook JJ and he would read the rest on his own. He liked them, but picked a different series to start reading independently. Then we moved onto Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes. Even though Hermione struggles with pronunciations, she loves how he writes and they crack up reading those aloud. So we're not National Mythology Exam ready yet, but we're getting there.

Philosophy/Critical Thinking/Reading Comprehension
We have worked on these monthly and will continue to work on them. They liked the Reading Detective books and nearly finished Inference Jones. One of those that we just keep plugging away.

Literature
My plans were to read:
Percy Jackson - We've read book 1 and Greek Heroes
Chronicles of Narnia - can wait
Redwall Series - on my to do list
The Hobbit - summer lit session or wait til middle school or both?

What did we read instead?
Fortunately, the Milk
The Red Pyramid
The Lightning Thief
The Phantom Tollbooth
The Cricket in Times Square
Gilgamesh: The Hero
From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
The BFG
The Witches - did not finish
Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh
Matilda
Flora & Ulysses

I really like reading non-series books. It makes me feel like we are accomplishing more or something. So I don't know what we are going to do with all of those series books I want to get to.

Plans change. Rabbit trails happen. They still learn.

Summer is nearly here and while we homeschool year round (well sort of..you'll see) we are finishing up some of our subjects and others we will finally be getting to. And I'm just fine with that. No reason to panic about being "behind".

Wait what?

We will do science in the summer. It has almost become a tradition. You know all of those so-called household ingredients for labs that I really don't have on-hand make me put it off for the next shopping trip. I thought I had a plan, but it just didn't happen. No need to panic or call the authorities. We still watched science documentaries and studied the weird critters that end up in our backyard. We went to the wetlands and the planetarium. Which means this summer we can focus on chemistry and possibly, though not likely, move onto physics.

Math was halted so we could focus on math fact fluency and review using Reflex Math and Khan Academy. I started both my 3rd and 4th grader on Early Math. Just shameful right?! Nope. Filling in gaps and building confidence was the plan. My 4th grader finished it in 2 months, which I believe is the fastest you can go because of the mastery challenge timer. We agreed to celebrate every completed level with a mommy date to the ice cream shop. My 3rd grader took 3.5 months. I still have their second semester math books sitting in a drawer unused. They will get to them and we will accelerate through it using their ninja math skills they've been working on. I do not doubt that.

Summer is also a time to work on individual problem areas. My 4th grader needs to continue on with his spelling. He needs to work on it daily and requires constant review. I bought the entire Apples and Pears spelling set so we could move from one book to another with no down time. My 3rd grader needs to work on her math. She needs constant review in that.

We also read some fun literature and poetry.

Sound like a lot? How can I get my kids to work through the summer?

Easy.

All this takes 2 hours a day. Not bad right? And when cousins come over or we take a trip, we cut back to listening to audiobooks. School doesn't have to slow us down. And I don't have to worry about them falling behind. It's almost like they don't even feel like they are doing school at all. Kind of like those people that sneak veggies into food thinking the kids won't notice. They know it's there, but it doesn't seem so bad.

Coming up I'll list what we did and didn't get to. Plans change. Rabbit trails happen. They still learn.

I decided to start the school year off with RSO Chemistry. Both of them have been begging to start Chemistry early. This lab is teaching them about physical and chemical tests so they can tell the difference between 3 different, but similar looking white powders (baby powder, powdered sugar and baking powder). They first used their senses to see if they could tell the difference. Then they systematically added liquids and compared reactions. They even got the bubbly reaction of baking powder and vinegar in there, always a favorite with the kids.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08945385698838991145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-672718690032050954.post-30356954966255496222015-08-30T13:30:00.002-07:002015-08-30T13:30:30.471-07:00My Homeschool Room for 2014-15 For the record, I am not a blog photographer. I do hope to one day take a photography class.
I took these pictures with my iPhone.
This is probably the neatest I will see this room all year, although I will try my best to keep it up. I cleared out a lot of stuff they outgrew and have some empty baskets and spaces to give new things homes.

Below is my son's desk. It's just a plastic folding table I already had. I decided to paint them since they were grayish and boring.

He likes it clean which means I am not allowed to "temporarily" pile stuff on it because he knows it will be there longer than temporarily.

I found an office chair that tilts because I grew oh so tired of telling him to stop tilting back on his old chair. He looooves the office chair and was super excited to see it put together.

The cubbies hold math manipulatives and card games. The baskets on top hold library and planned read aloud books and poetry books for Poetry Tea.

I found an Alice in Wonderland tea set at Home Goods. It's proudly on display in the center.

The top middle basket holds all of my science experiment supplies. I need a place to put those random items when I come home from the store; otherwise, I can't find them when I need them. We're doing Real Science Odyssey Chemistry this year and have at least one, usually two labs every week. It's a lot of little supplies that I usually have on hand, but when there is something I don't usually have, like salt-substitute, I put it in there for when I need it.

My area.
I pulled out my chair so you could see everything I need for the school day is within reach.
The left tower has subjects we use every day. If I didn't have enough room, then those subjects went on the bottom bookshelf.
The right tower holds lined paper, laminate sheets, c-rods and other supplies.
We are doing 4th grade this year, which is the perfect year to start series books. I have them all lined up in the bookshelf on the left. We're starting with Kane Chronicles, then Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus to go with History. For Literature, we have Chronicles of Narnia and the first two books in the Harry Potter series.
My daughter's desk.

This is probably the cleanest it will be all year. She has tons of art supplies surrounding her and a giant trash can that is supposed to help with the little pieces of cut up paper. (it really doesn't) .

She has the closet next to her with more art supplies. I gave her all of my old cardmaking/scrapbooking supplies and she is loving it. She'll spend hours making little books for her American Girl dolls. She also has a strange fascination with making paper brooms for her dolls. Her dolls must love to clean because so far she's made about 20 brooms.

My grandmother had a rock collection and I thought I would try it out in the middle of the table. I thought it would be something interesting to look at and it would weigh down the tablecloth. The kids do like handling them and seeing how they sparkle in the sun.

We're using an online charter school for 9th and 10th and then applying to an early college charter school for junior and senior year. Charter schools are a part of the public school system, so I have to follow their rules. We are not homeschooling through high school for several reasons. If you would like to know more about why, see my 9th grade post.
Hold Onto Your Guidance Counselor Cap, You're In For A Bumpy Ride.
When you are a parent and homeschooling a high schooler, you need to put on your guidance counselor cap an awful lot. Always keep a 4-year plan to reference back to. Make sure you know what is required of you in your state. Some states don't require homeschoolers to cover certain topics, some do and that is important to know even if you never step foot in a public school. This is my plan so far. He's had some input, but at this point, he's not super interested in looking at the long term goals, so I've made it my job to give him some time to decide what he wants to major in and to put him in a good position to go for it once he has decided.
To graduate high school, he will need to make sure he gets at least 3 sciences with 2 labs to get the Advanced Diploma. Most Universities require Biology, Chemistry and Physics. He's taken Honors Biology last year and is currently in Honors Chemistry through the online school, but virtual labs are not always accepted by universities. To get a full 3 credits of science in for his high school requirements, he'll have to take 2 sciences at the CC (which also covers his General Ed Requirement for Science for the AA) and both of those will need labs to cover all requirements.

As I've said before, my 7 year old daughter (she'll be 8 before the start of the school year) does everything my 9 year old does except in math. This is what keeps me sane. They have opposite strengths and weaknesses, which keeps them both stretching a little. This was a problem when they were younger, now he understands that she answers first for comprehension questions and he answers first for spelling.
*Links to all curriculum will be at the bottom of the list along with links to samples if available.

Writing - 5x a week

Bravewriter - This teaches a relaxed lifestyle of reading good books aloud, discussing them, copywork, monthly literary terms, weekly poetry tea parties, art and nature study, and free writing. Bravewriter encourages snuggling up on the couch together with some hot chocolate and reading together. There is nothing schoolish about this curriculum and I love it.

Writer's Jungle - Written to you, the parent, it will explain everything to you, the lifestyle, the schedule, the writing process, a must-have when starting this program. Homeschool Buyers Co-op has it in PDF format for 50% off.

Jot it Down/Partnership Writing/Faltering Ownership - This has monthly projects included that are specific for the age range. This is helpful if you prefer more guidance and structure while maintaining a relaxed homeschool. It is optional, she just does the work for you.

The Arrow/Boomerang - Provides literary terms, copywork and at least one project all for one book. This can be a subscription or you can find your favorite book and purchase single issues separately. HSBC has most of the single issues for 50% off when purchased in 5 or 10 quantity. These are helpful if you prefer more guidance and structure while maintaining a relaxed homeschool. It is optional, she just does the work for you.

Writing With Ease 2-3 - Some might say this is so very different than Bravewriter, why would I combine the two? Well, I like this as a fall back for when I start to go through those rough months where I don't have the motivation to plan or we've finished our read aloud early and want to keep up the momentum. I use a lower level which allows us to accelerate through it during those months. Then, we are happy to go back to the more relaxed BW lifestyle. I think it makes me feel like I'm covering all of my bases. This combo may or may not work for you. I school year round and try to go with the ebb and flow of our homeschool.

The workbook is all you need since it includes tear-out student pages in the back. If you have more than one child or know you will need to use it again down the road, you can purchase additional student pages at Peace Hill Press. If you have a printer and like to print as you go, the PDF version is cheaper and that will be all you need for yourself and all of your students. They are huge books, so check the page count before deciding to print it yourself.

Grammar - 3-5x a week

Grammaropolis - for the songs - parts of speech

Evan-Moor Grammar & Punctuation - For regular review of basic grammar and punctuation rules to go with the curriculum below. It's very short. If you want more grammar, then Evan-Moor's Language Fundamentals might be what you are looking for. It includes rewriting sentences, vocabulary, paragraph editing and more for an all-in-one grammar book.

All of these below are for editing practice. Sometimes it's easier on kids to see and correct other people's mistakes. We have been using EM Daily Paragraph Editing and they both enjoy it. I wanted to add a little variety and so we'll be working through these over the next year or two. It's not a big deal if we don't get through all of them. The point is to have them practice finding mistakes so they can correct their own work. Keep it simple, keep it fun.

Literature

I have been listening to the Read-Aloud Revival Podcasts and gathering together all kinds of ideas and resources. I plan to read Deconstructing Penguins and use some of Mt. Hope Academy Reading Detectives ideas when reading a book aloud. The key is quality books and lively discussions. I think my 4th grader, who already possesses some lawyer tendencies to question everything, will enjoy these conversations.

Read Alouds - 5x a week
4th grade is the start of many great series. I like reading series books aloud because it keeps everyone interested and wanting to find out what happens next. I have no delusions that I will be able to finish this list. This is what I would like to complete this year, but I do not expect to finish this. I like to read aloud and see how it goes. I may end up reading book 1 and the then having them read the rest independently. They may request we read them all aloud, which would take longer. I don't really care as long as we are reading and having fun.

Percy Jackson Series - my oldest tore through these when he was in 4th grade. I plan to introduce Greek Mythology at the same time. Completely ignoring the terrible movies, this is a fantastic series.

The Chronicles of Narnia - BW Arrow - Powerful Verbs

Redwall Series - BW Arrow - Onomatopoeia

Harry Potter Books 1-4

The Hobbit

Beast Academy

A comic book study guide with separate practice book by The Art of Problem Solving. This is a challenging set for advanced learners or perfect for reviewing older concepts while keeping it rigorous. It can be stand alone, but I'm using it a grade lower (3 Series) for 4th grade to supplement and mix math up a bit. Great for summer math.

Reflex Math

An online math site that uses games to practice and master math facts. My son loves it. The games are actually fun. He unlocks new games as he masters math facts. My daughter, on the other hand, did not like it as much since she really hates being timed.

Story of the World with Activity Book

Back to the beginning with Book 1. We'll speed through some sections and slow down on others. I thought it would be fun to go back and really spend some time on Egypt, Greece and Rome since we'll be reading Percy Jackson and learning about Greek Mythology. My son is currently obsessing on Vikings, so I hope to work our way through book 2 by the end of the year. Next year we'll be focusing on U.S. and state history which will be good timing for book 3 and 4. I have the audiobooks as well as the hardcovers, so we listen a lot in the car and repeat. I don't mind jumping around to what interests them as long as they understand where they are in the timeline.

We tend to block schedule with some subjects. I labeled science and history for 2x a week because that is how the curriculum suggests we do it. What usually ends up happening is we'll run through a few months of enjoying Story of the World and then we'll spend a few months doing science. My 4th grader likes to go deep into subjects, so we've found it's easier to set aside a chunk of time for him to dedicate to research and then follow those rabbit trails.

Everything will go smoothly, the kids are eager to learn, there will be art and music and foreign language, possibly even two and then we are struck with reality.

Homeschooling, just as parenting, is not always going to be perfect.

And you know what?

That's okay. They are going to be just fine.

I'm here for those times when you've spent hours upon hours pinning everyone else's perfect homeschool rooms and plans and panic has set in at how imperfect you and your homeschool are.

When you've followed all the advice given by wiser, more experienced homeschoolers and failed miserably.

When the kids hate the project that took you a week to plan out and gather the material. When you read the book everyone has recommended and you cannot stand it.

It happens.

It all happens to us all.

Maybe it's because we're afraid that homeschooling is viewed as being difficult when done right already. If we don't put on that brave face, others might think we can't hack it. Then we'll be turned into the example of what not to be like when homeschooling. Does she really have piles of laundry all over the house? The kids haven't showered in two days? Tsk tsk She just isn't able to cope with it all. She really should just put them in public school.

Maybe it's because we want to be that Type-A female that can do anything, but realistically we're more Type-B.

Maybe we're feeling a bit of girl power and think to ourselves, we got this.

We can make our own schedule.

We can go wherever we want.

We don't have to play by the bosses rules.

We can read all day and stay in our pjs.

We can sip tea at noon, eat pizza and read poetry at the park.

We can spend all day long with our kids, watching them make connections, consoling them when their favorite character dies in their favorite book and struggling alongside them with their math.

We have it really good.

You know, we really should be on top of things more.

Some of us may feel like we have something to prove. I'm a homeschooling stay-at-home mom who has been out of the workforce for years and this is what and who I am. I have to look a certain way or keep the house a certain way or those judgey-judgers out there are going to judge me.

Watch out for the judgey-judgers; for they will steal your self-worth right out from under you.

I'm not really sure what it is that makes us put on our blinders when we plan and dream of our perfect homeschool.

When all else fails, remember, when the kids look back on their homeschool days with you, they'll be thinking of the time you spent together and maybe those imperfections are what they'll love the most. The time you burned the cookies that they made for the history lesson. The time you forgot about the mummified chicken in the garage and freaked the movers out. And hunting down every last library book so the already huge fines didn't require dipping into the college fund. It isn't perfect, but it's all we've got.

You can research curriculum, spend weeks planning out the year, print everything out and then it all gets pushed back to follow those rabbit trails. Rabbit trails happen and the best thing you can do is just go with it. They show interest and are an amazing opportunity for some child-led learning.

This year, we haven't touched some of the books that are on our 3rd Grade reading list and that is just fine. They loved Charlotte's Web so much, we moved onto The Trumpet of the Swan. I also happened upon a Roald Dahl boxed set, which I just had to take home with me of course! My 7 year old daughter couldn't wait to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My 9 year old son, chose The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me, a perfect choice for my animal and song loving kid.

We ended up dwelling in White and Dahl and loving every moment of it. Reading outside, inside, snuggled on the couch, with some hot tea, hot chocolate or Gobstoppers. We had a chocolate taste testing and studied how chocolate is really made. We invented our own candy and visited a history of chocolate exhibit.

It wasn't planned.

It just happened.

And they are still talking about it.

They have retained it.

They have developed a love of reading and stories.

This was not work.

This was using what they loved and going deeper with it.

They voluntarily started researching swans when reading Trumpet of the Swan.

We are now reading James and the Giant Peach and they immediately dug out the animal encyclopedia to look up information on all of the insects in the book. It's just natural to want to know more, to be curious.

They want to understand the world around them.

Don't be afraid to follow those rabbit trails. You never know where you'll end up.

As homeschool parents, we worry
that our children are going to fall behind because they aren't "on
track" with their peers.

How do you know that your child doesn't have their own track? Their
own timeline of developmentally appropriate learning?

Maybe your child needed to spend extra time on
addition and subtraction early on and now is more than a semester behind in
their math book. While the public school progressed on leaving students who
weren't ready for addition and subtraction behind, you spent the extra time to
make sure they got it. Now your child is in 2nd grade and blowing through the
material you give her because she finally gets it. She's catching up fast.
That's what happened to my daughter.

We spent so much time and energy on basic number
sense, addition, subtraction, clocks and money. I repeated chapters. I
supplemented with other, more simplified math hoping that maybe it was the way
it was explained in our math program. Nope, she just wasn't getting it. I
worried she had dyscalculia, which is a difficulty in learning or comprehending arithmetic, such as difficulty in understanding numbers and learning math facts. Why? Because she wasn't learning? Because she was "falling behind"? She could read at a 6th grade level at 6 years, 9 months old. Why wasn't she getting math?

The answer is she had her own track for math.

My middle son has his own track for reading. This one had me worried he would never learn or be interested in reading. It wasn't until he turned 9 and discovered a book series he loved (Captain Underpants) that he finally started reading on his own, with enthusiasm. He preferred to read out loud because he wanted to share the funny stories with us. I had him read each book twice for fluency and he did not mind at all.

This is the son that didn't start talking until age 3. He still goes to speech therapy for his /R/ sounds. At 8 years, 7 months I gave him the DORA test and he scored at or below grade level for everything except reading comprehension and oral vocabulary. He would drive me nuts when I would read out loud because he never appeared to be paying attention, but he could always narrate back to me exactly what I just read.

I feared he could never quiet his mind enough to sit and read a book. One night, when he was 8 years old, he asked to have a reading light like his big brother clipped to his bed. He has trouble going to sleep at night (his mind goes a million miles a minute) and wanted to try reading just like big brother. I thought this was perfect! Of course I would do it and of course our daughter wanted one as well. And that was when he finally started trying to read. He wanted to read The Spiderwick Chronicles. Those books are 4th grade level books with plenty of large words to sound out. He worked his way through them because he wanted to. Those books were hard work for him, too. He would show me any words he couldn't sound out or didn't know the next day. He worked hard at it, but it wasn't really until 3rd grade and Captain Underpants came along that he truly enjoyed the act of reading. I bought another DORA test and plan to have him take it at the end of the year. I'll update with the results.

Do not be discouraged because your child is not ready to do the same tasks as other children. They are just working at a different pace and that is one of the beautiful things about homeschooling. They are given the time to work to mastery and then move on. So give yourself and your kids a break and drop the idea of grades and what the other kids are doing in public school.

We went to the Washington rain forest in October. As a little reminder, we made terrariums around Christmas and they are still thriving. I only had to open the lid once after day two when I noticed there was too much water in there. I had to dry it out a bit.

The other terrarium had a larger fern in it. I was able to break the first one up much easier. The one below looks more like the rain forest.

I remember loving Charlotte's Web as a child. I truly adore reading E.B. White. His simple style just flows out so smooth and steady, creating an easy and enjoyable read.

As I was reading Charlotte's Web aloud to my 7 and 9 year old, I knew the chapter where Charlotte dies was coming. I worried that it might be upsetting to my animal-loving children and seeing me cry would make them start crying and we would have a cryfest and never get to the end of the book. As I approached the chapter, I steeled myself. Then, I reach the paragraph and start to tear up. Hold it together. As I'm reading about Charlotte dying, I start to struggle with my words, slowing the pace, trying to just get through it.

My 9 year old looks up and asks, "Are you crying?"
I reply, "Yes. It's so very sad. Charlotte was such a good friend and spider."

My 7 year old daughter then takes the book from me and takes over reading for me; reading the next two chapters with complete composure. After we finish the book, we watch the movie during lunch to compare the two. When she dies in the movie, my 9 year old checks on me to see if I'm crying. I'm thinking, how on earth am I going to get through all of these children's books that seem designed to make you cry?!? I guess we all better get used to it because we have so many books to read!

Upon finishing, my daughter asked if she could take the book up to her room to read again on her own. Of course you can, I know you'll love it as much as I did.
